Vitals: Buchanan, senior, 800/1,600/3,200

He’s qualified because: Near-miss Bee Athlete of the Year scored 22 points in the Central Section meet in a grueling triple – seconds in the 1,600 (4:14.71) and 3,200 (9:22.21), and third in the 800 (1:54.97).

He placed fifth in the state in the 1,600 (4:10.04) – No. 2 all time in the section – and his season-best 9:04.30 in the 3,200 is No. 14.

Next stop: Duke.

He said it: “Running three distance races [in one meet] is unheard of. He came up to me after our league meet and asked to run all three in the Valley because he wanted the team to win it. It was his attitude and what he was willing to sacrifice for the team. Just amazing. He’s a kid who’s primed and ready to move on to the next level.” – Bears coach Brian Weaver.
