Flogging raises questions
The Jan. 13 picture of the Acehnese woman being caned (flogged) in Indonesia was very disturbing. I had just read "Price of Honor" (a New York Times notable book) by Jan Goodwin that spells out the role of women in Islamic-controlled countries. The picture raised many questions in my mind which were not answered by the caption:
Did she violate the dress code? Did her head scarf slip revealing her natural hair? Did she commit adultery? Was she raped?
Was she given a virginity test? Did she not have money to pay a fine? Did she serve alcohol at a party?

She's qualified because: She's fifth among the top 40 freshmen in the state. She finished 33rd in 18:40 in the D-I state race, and was the third section finisher among 198 runners. She was the fourth-fastest freshman in the D-I field. She placed fifth (19:06) in the section for D-I, and her sixth-place finish (18:16) at the Clovis Invite placed her at the top of Bullard's All-Time Top 25 List for Woodward Park.

She's qualified because: When the Player of the Year from the mighty Tri-River Athletic Conference comes from a team that tied for last place she must have impressive credentials.
And Davin does with a .459 batting average, two doubles, five triples, five home runs, 22 runs and 20 RBIs.
The Timberwolves’ starting shortstop posted a whopping .776 slugging percentage, and also has a 4.0 GPA.
She said it: “The thing about Melissa is that she is one of those players who can take whatever else is happening on the outside and just focus on the game, defense, offense or however to contribute to the team.
