Mat Nordstrom
School: Hanford
Year: Senior
Position: Forward/midfielder
Need to know: West Yosemite League Offensive Player of the Year led his team with 17 goals and 13 assists (10 goals, 10 assists in league play). Bullpups had WYL’s most potent offense, averaging 3.1 goals per game en route to 9-2-1 record and first-place finish. Hanford lost 4-3 to Highland in Central Section Division III quarterfinals to finish 12-7-3 overall. “Goals were hard to come by in the defensive WYL but Mat always seemed to manage to be involved with putting the ball in the back of the net,” Hanford coach Patrick Hendricks said. “Mat was a player that made everyone around him better. During the season Mat was often the focal point of the other team’s defense, yet he rarely got shut down. When given the opportunity to shoot, Mat would make sure it counted, but what made Mat a true team player and Valley All-Star was his attitude and teamwork on the field. Mat was just as happy getting an assist or setting up a play for others as he was to score a goal.”
